Horonobe Underground Research Center managed by Japan Atomic Energy Agency (JAEA) is the Japan's best environment to understand the project of geological disposal of high-level radioactive waste, because there is an Underground Research Laboratory (URL) in the center besides an exhibition facility which explains the content of research conducted in the URL. In the area of the center, there is also an exhibition facility for the full-scale model of engineered barrier system of geological disposal. JAEA takes advantage of this opportunity to conduct public hearing including questionnaire research regarding the questions, anxieties and comments by the visitors for geological disposal project. This report summarizes the result of statistical analysis of 3,842 visitors from April 2017 to January 2018.

Japan Atomic Energy Agency has been conducting "geoscientific study" and "research and development on geological disposal" in the Horonobe Underground Research Laboratory (URL) for safe geological disposal of high-level radioactive waste. Geochemical parameters of groundwater pressure, pH, and oxidation-reduction potential in the deep groundwater has been continuously monitored with monitoring systems which were developed in the Horonobe URL Project. This report presents the physico-chemical parameters of groundwater which have been obtained by the monitoring systems installed at the 140 m, 250 m and 350 m gallery. The data obtained until March 31, 2017 was summarized along with related information such as the specifications of boreholes and the excavation of the URL.

The objectives of this study is to identify the research issues, which are to be conducted in the future underground research laboratory, about operation and logistics systems for the planning of future research and development program. The research programs and experiments,etc. were investigated for the geological disposal projects in overseas sedimentary rocks and coastal geological environments aiming to reflect in the future underground research facility plan in Japan. In the investigation, information on the engineered-barrier performance, design and construction of underground facilities, tunnel support, transportation and emplacement, and backfilling technology, etc. were collected. Based on these informations, the purpose, the content, and the result of each investigations and tests were arranged. The strategy and the aim in the entire underground research facility, and the flow of investigations and tests, etc. were also arranged from the purpose, the relations and the sequence of each investigation and experiment, and the usage of results, etc.

The paper reviews the applicable knowledge of the migration properties in deep underground gained by R&D in Mizunami and Horonobe URL. Summing up the major migration path, it is necessary to consider the fracture continuity / connectivity of hundreds of meters in granite of Mizunami area, while several hundred meters in the shallow part of sedimentary rock and of tens m scale in the deep part of Horonobe. On the other hand, it was also demonstrated that analogue elements are practically immobile in rock masses and closed galleries.
